are we part of the world or is the world part of us?

Ah, is it all in our imagination?
Philosophical question!

I think both.

I think we are definitely in the world. How could it be otherwise? It is not possible to think that it is all an illusion. We influence the outer world and we can see the results of our acts,
but I can't prove this. It is my intimate conviction only.

Also we hold the world in our minds, and even in the other parts of our body.
We observe and imagine the world.
Our brains effect our bodies through our nervous system, making us frightened, aggresive or happy, for example. Our heart reacts, our breathing reacts, our skin reacts, our hair stands on end...
The world effects us in so many ways. An accident can cut off an arm...

I never studied philosophy and I regret it. So I can't make a good argument.

I think there is a continual exchange between the outer and the inner world.
That is a poor reply. :D

I think it's a question, which has only true or wrong answers... and it depends on your point of view.
Probably it is good for our responsibility to see us standing in the world being part of the world, changing it, hurting it or healing...
But, we are not able to leave our head, so what we think the world is, is our imagination, perhaps the same imagination as others (human beings) have, but imagination. We describe and explain reality like we find it out... two hundred years ago, we had other answers, but they were also true... we didn't know better...

I don't think you gave me a poor reply...I think my words are poor both because I' forgot everything (in English words) but also because I don't have the one true answer to that question. I think it is an interesting point to think about :)

Yes, you say what I tried to say.

Where is truth?

Does truth exist?

How can we explain it?

Our truth is not the same as others, so is there "one" truth, when everyone claims that their version is the only one?

I can't think that it is all an illusion, because I learn things that have happened and recognize them as being the causes of what is happening now and which affect me.
I can't imagine either that all the universe we "observe" together exists only in my mind. Since we observe things together and agree, the universe must exist outside of our brains.

My body interacts with the exterior and I know it through my sensual perceptions.
If I am isolated in a room with no light, no noise and no physical stimuli, I go mad.
So I conclude that the exterior exists, and my life depends on it.

As you say at different times, and in different places today, mankind has interpreted reality in different manners, which has led to very different cultures and beliefs.
This is why we must practice tolerance.
Here is the problem of what we accept and what we must refuse according to our "truth".

At the moment, the British are discussing immigration laws. There are problems concerning asylum seekers.
There is a young man from Iran who is homosexual. He is an illegal immigrant. The authorities want to deport him back to Iran.
His partner there has been executed for his homosexuality, he was tortured and gave this man's name. So this immigrant faces sure death.

If the British government follows the law, they will send him back.
There is a great discussion going on about the law.

Immigration laws concern all EU territories. There is a move to make them all the same. I don't agree with this.

So we must act as if we had "the truth" but with a place for doubt, and tolerance. However we cannot accept certain differences which seem too cruel or unjust. There would be a long list.

Some peoples have very strict laws based on religious belief, such as Saudi Arabia. If we apply our criteria of respecting other cultures to countries like Saudi Arabia, then we find ourselves with problems of tolerance. What can we do?
Personally I think no-one should go to this land. We keep away. We cannot make them change without overthrowing their leaders and we have seen that in Iraq, this doesn't work.
We cannot kill people because we don't agree with them.
If we kill, how can we criticize others for killing.

It is a great problem. Respect and tolerance against our deepest convictions.
Perhaps all we can do to remain true to our beliefs, is to say that existence is imperfect and we cannot expect to make every injustice disappear. If every culture thought this there would be less violence.

We must live in a compromise.
I don't like that. What else can I do?
I think you are the same.

That is rather far from our original question.
I always let my thoughts run away.

I like thinking, but I am not very logical and sometimes my arguments are not clear.
I have learned a lot from my French husband who is always very clear.
I think France teaches logic better than England.

These are the only words I don't agree with... I think your position is very clear and
logical...:)
Yes I agree, but your statement is political and there is nearly no difference between
us... My question is another. But don't mind... This question has no answer... probably..:)
