Wir können die Zeit einem endlos drehenden Kreis vergleichen: die stets sinkende Hälfte wäre die Vergangenheit, die stets steigende die Zukunft; oben aber der untheilbare Punkt, der die Tangente berührt, wäre die ausdehnungslose Gegenwart. Der Berührungspunkt des Objekts, dessen Form die Zeit ist, mit dem Subjekt, das keine Form hat, weil es nicht zum Erkennbaren gehört, sondern Bedingung alles Erkennbaren ist. Oder: die Zeit gleicht einem unaufhaltsamen Strom, und die Gegenwart einem Felsen, an dem sich jeder bricht, aber nicht ihn mit fortreißt. ...
Wen daher das Leben wie es ist, befriedigt, wer es auf alle Weise bejaht, der kann es mit Zuversicht als endlos betrachten und die Todesfurcht als eine Täuschung bannen, welche ihm die ungereimte Furcht eingiebt, er könne der Gegenwart je verlustig werden, und ihm eine Zeit vorspiegelt ohne eine Gegenwart darin: eine Täuschung, welche in Hinsicht auf die Zeit Das ist, was in Hinsicht auf den Raum jene andere, vermöge wlecher Jeder, in seiner Phantasie, die Stelle auf der Erdkugel, welche er gereade einnimmt, als das Oben und alles Uebrige als das Unten ansieht: eben so knüpft Jeder die Gegenwart an seine Individualität und meint, mit dieser verlösche alle Gegenwart; Vergangenheit und Zukunft seien nun ohne dieselbe. Wie aber auf der Erdkugel überall oben ist, so ist auch die Form alles Lebens Gegenwart, und den Tod fürchten, weil er uns die Gegenwart entreißt, ist nicht weiser, als fürchten man könne von der runden Erdkugel, auf welcher man glücklicherweise nun gerade oben steht, hinuntergleiten. ...
